That 70’s Totally Mashed

70sUnheard

That’s 70’s Totally Mashed takes something old, something new, something borrowed and some rock for you. 🙂 Am Radio was slowly moving out of popularity. The new bight and clear choice of FM was here. Freedom, Love and Music was exploring no boundaries. New sounds sights and more to be explored in an era of political and news filled chaos.

The 70’s Music Scene

Traveling back in time to that golden decade of music when rock, soul, funk and disco all blossomed in unison.

After Watergate, many people turned to pop culture–easy to do in such a trend-laden, fad-happy decade. They listened to 8-track tapes of Jackson Browne, Olivia Newton-John, Donna Summer and Marvin Gaye. Disco rose and with it, the sounds of Abba, the Bee Gees and Donna Summer. On the rock front, bands like the Rolling Stones, Van Halen, Pink Floyd and Queen dominated airwaves.

A look inside the decade and the culture

The 1970s were a tumultuous time. In some ways, the decade was a continuation of the 1960s. Women, African Americans, Native Americans, gays and lesbians and other marginalized people continued their fight for equality, and many Americans joined the protest against the ongoing war in Vietnam. In other ways, however, the decade was a repudiation of the 1960s.

A “New Right” of political conservatism and traditional family roles, and the behavior of President Richard Nixon undermined many people’s faith in the good intentions of the federal government. By the end of the decade, these divisions and disappointments had set a tone for public life that many would argue is still with us today.

The 1970s also saw a return of handicrafts like latch-hook rugs and macramé, while sports like racquetball and yoga gained popularity. Many people read “I’m OK, You’re OK” and “The Joy of Sex,” experimented with wife-swapping parties and smoked pot. In general, by the end of the decade, many young people were using their hard-fought freedom to simply do as they pleased: to wear what they wanted, to grow their hair long, to have sex, to do drugs. Their liberation, in other words, was intensely personal.
